When Andrew Makepeace Ladd III accepts an invitation to Melissa Gardner’s birthday party, and Melissa writes a thank-you note, a romantic friendship and correspondence destined to last for almost half a century are born. A.R. Gurney’s two-character play follows the relationship between a stuffy W.A.S.P. and a free-spirited woman, throughout their lives from childhood to death, as chronicled in the letters they write to each other. Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1988.
